The American Driving Culture is Changing

We all know this. Economics helps to create culture. Cheap fuel has helped to create a driving culture that is particular to North America. Some aspects of that culture are damaging: massive motors, gas guzzlers, greenhouse gasses. Some aspects of that culture are beautiful: freedom, wide open spaces, road trips. But the economics of energy are changing, and as the economics change, our culture will change. We won’t stop driving, but we’ll drive cheaper, cleaner, and smarter.

ParkPod Wall-Mount Unit

SDN’s sponsor, ParkPod, recently announced the commercial availability of a wall-mounted version of its dual charging station. Pretty slick:

The unit is stainless steel and powder coated, approximately 44″ wide, and can charge two vehicles concurrently at up to 32A (Level 2 charging: 204 to 240V). It can operate across a vast temperature range (as low as -40 deg F upon request), features an integrated RFID reader, and is SAE J1772 compliant.

It’s a stunning piece of equipment, from both an engineering and a design perspective.

WE ADMIT IT

It’ll be a while before EV charging stations are ubiquitous. On the other hand, it’s not like there are any gas stations out here, either.
